Myanmar, also known as Burma, is one of the most beautiful and unaffected holiday destinations of South-East Asia. The south of Myanmar is located on the Bay of Bengal and stretches along the Mergui Archipelago, which runs parallel to the Thai-Burmese mainland and forms a part of the Andaman Sea.
The Mergui Archipelago consists of more than 800 islands and attracts many divers by offering a number of haunting diving adventures.
One of those islands is called MacLeod. Situated about 72 km afar from Kawthaung (Victoria Point) and the Thai Border town Ranong, it is home to/houses ‘Nabuccos’s Myanmar Andaman Resort’.
‘Nabucco’s Myanmar Andaman Resort’ is located on Macleod Island, directly at one of its long and awfully beautiful sandy beaches. The small resort is almost hidden, as you approach the long beach, you can notice the carefully constructed bungalows made from local eco-friendly materials.
A reception (with satellite phone and internet access), a bar and a restaurant as well as a laundry service are offered to the guests. The kitchen serves a selection of tasty Western and traditional Burmese dishes and offers a finely assorted wine list to complement your meal.
The resort provides 14 bungalows (approx. 26 square meters) and 8 suites (approx. 40 square meters). Both, bungalows and suites have hot water, air condition, minibar, mosquito net and hair-dryer.
A trip to the Mergui Archipelago still feels like a discovery journey. It offers an untouched underwater world and the biggest part of its reefs is still totally untouched. This makes perfect conditions for divers with a certain pioneering spirit and desire to detect something new. Thanks to its biodiversity and variety, which can hardly be exceeded, the Mergui Archipelago ranks among the best dive spots around the world, especially valued by marine biologists. Most of the outstanding dive spots are easily accessible by boat.
There is no mass tourism at all, at the Mergui Archipelago. The only resort in the area with around 800 uninhabited islands is ‘Nabucco’s Myanmar Andaman Resort’ together with the only dive centre of the region.
Following an assortment of 4 of the about 30 dive spots, this can be approached easily:
Western Rocky is the southernmost dive spot of the Burmese Mergui Archipelago. Nearby this small island, with a length of only 60 meters and a width of 30 meters, are 4 rock formations looming vertically out of the water. About 22 meters deep in the water, there is the entrance of a cave, pervading the whole island and running out / tapering off funnel formed. The exit is pretty narrow, with a diameter of only 1 meter. The cave is shelter for many lobsters in any size.
Fan Forrest Pinnacle is situated 12 km northward from Western Rocky. The mountainous underwater landscape is covered with soft corals and sea urchins. The smoothest part of it is at about 5 meters, the deepest one at approximate 40 meters. On the roof of this reef, you will mostly see some sepias, the northern- and eastern part is plenty of fan corals. Due to the spawning out of many fishes at this place, what attract the hunting ones, of course, also, the varieties of fish have to be pointed out. The dive spot is even well known its white top sharks; you will see leopard sharks also rather often.
High Rock is located about 500 meters southwards of the isle Quion. You will find a huge cliff ranging out of the water, with an eye-catching isolated tree on it. North- and west side of High Rock are bearing away rather arduous, while the southern- and eastern parts are offering a cliffy reef to the viewer’s eyes. You will find lots of scorpion fishes as well as it’s a melting point for lots of prawns, especially cleaning prawns.
The Arch - Just a kilometre afar from Macleod Island, there is The Arch, a small rock, backsliding up to 25 meters. In the depth of about 15 meters, there is a big swelling, the walls inside covered with soft corals and sea fans and in between admirable schools of Bengal snappers. The walls are crowded by several kinds of crabs and morays; also many times you can find schools of barracudas around the cliff.
The Extra Divers dive centre is integrated into the "Nabucco´s Myanmar Andaman Resort".
The base is bounteous designed and provides new equipment. According to SSI and PADI standards, the Extra Divers are teaching anyone from beginner to Dive master level. The dive spots are carried up by the resorts speed boat. The house reef offers a 24/7-diving: day dives as well as night dives are great amendment to the boat trips.
