SHARKS AND WHALE SHARKS BEHAVIOR STUDY

WHALE SHARK

The Whale shark (Rhiniodon typus), the giant of all sharks and fishes, is said to reach a length of 20 m and a maximum weight of 34 tons. But the biggest specimen actually measured was only 13,70 m long for a 10 tons weight, still very impressive. The king of sharks has nothing to do with a “Jaws” monster type. The Whaleshark, together with other species belonging to the Elasmobranchii class (sharks and rays) living in a pelagic environment in a depth range from 0 to 700 m, will be one of the subjects of study of this expedition. The Tanzanian coast and islands are a gigantic reserve of food where we can observe movements of large pelagic fishes. Seasonal variations in current patterns thus have a major effect on the distribution of such species.

The goal of this expedition is to search, find out, and observe different species of pelagic fishes, specially sharks. The behavior of these animals is closely linked to their need to survive as long as possible, until the reproduction period that will ensure the survival of the species. For this purpose, the animals need to maintain three essential physiological functions: breathing, eating and reproducing.

We will adapt our equipment according to the natural environment, using the right professional device to get the best results and pictures. Each of you, as a member of the expedition, will take part in this study, bringing your own knowledge, ideas and actions to this exciting adventure.

We point out that snorkeling is the best way to approach and observe whalesharks. Diving will be organized with other species of pelagic.

The 2006/7 expeditions follow a 10 days pattern
