MINDORO ISLAND- PUERTO GALERA - PHILIPPINES
Mindoro is the second biggest island
in the Philippines, lying to the South of Manila. The
main tourist area runs from Puerto Galera to Roxas and Mansalay.
The fine beaches and excellent diving at Puerto Galera have been attracting travellers for some time. For about 60 years,
the area has been regarded by zoologists and botanists as an ideal place to study
the ecostructure of animals, plants and micro organism in almost undisturbed natural conditions. In 1934, the UP Marine Biological Station was set up
and forty years later, the United Nations Man & Biosphere programme declared Puerto Galera
a Nature Centre..

THE DIVING
The Marine Park of Puerto Galera offers
some very good reefs. Diving conditions in the best spots can be quite challenging, as the currents are often fairly swift,
yet it is this flow that has allowed the reefs to recover to some extent from
past fishing practices. Expect to find plenty of soft corals and shoals of pelagic when the current runs.
There are more than 27 different dive sites
accessible in a few minutes by boat from the resort,
and these cover a whole range of underwater experiences: wrecks, shallow areas, riptide,
open water, reefs and on top of all breathtaking coral gardens and the largest variety of
underwater animals in the world. Around 2100 species
are found here including white fins, turtles, big amberjacks, barracudas etc.
An excellent destination for macro photographers
